Die südlichste Stadt der Welt/ The southern-most city in the world

Das ist jetzt mein dritter Versuch diesen Post zu schreiben - mein Handy war bis jetzt nicht sehr kooperativ. Aber aller guten Dinge sind ja drei. Und wir sind da - angekommen in Ushuaia, 4.700km Luftlinie von Rurrenabaque im Norden Boliviens von wo ich mich vor einem Monaten Richtung Süden aufgemacht habe und dem Endpunkt des 3. Teils* meiner Reise.

Einmal rauszoomen und man sieht dass das mit dem Ende der Welt nicht soweit hergeholt ist, auf dem Breitengrad gibt es sonst tatsächlich nicht mehr viel:

​Nach unserer Torres del Paine Wanderung (die einen eigenen Blogeintrag wert ist) sind wir am Sonntagabend zurück nach Puerto Natales gekommen, wo wir unser Gepäck in einem Guesthouse deponiert hatten (saubere Klamotten und ein warmes Zimmer weiß man nach ein paar Tagen in Berghütten wieder so richtig zu schätzen).

Gestern (also Montag) haben wir es dann ruhig angehen lassen, ausgiebig gefrühstückt und dann uns noch etwas Puerto Natales angeschaut, ein kleines Städtchen mit zum Teil ziemlich windschiefen Häuschen. Mittags ging unser Bus nach Punta Arenas, das uns mit seiner Größe etwas überrascht hat. Mit 130.000 Einwohner ist das eine richtige Stadt und auch hier haben wir das lange Tageslicht für einen Stadtbummel genutzt und waren dann bei La Marmita sehr sehr lecker essen.​

​Es sind zwar nur 250km von Punta Arenas nach Ushuaia, aber die beschäftigen einen den ganzen Tag. In der Früh um 8:30 war Abfahrt in Punta Arenas. Allerdings erst nach etwas Drama - Punta Arenas hat a) keinen Busbahnhof, die einzelnen Busfirmen fahren jeweils an ihren Büros ab und b) hat eine seltsame Art der Hausnummerierung - 264 ist nicht das gleiche wie 0264, was wiederum Google Maps nicht versteht. Lange Rede kurzer Sinn - wir standen 10 Minuten vor der Zeit auf unseren Tickets vor dem falschen Haus. Aber dank eines netten Autofahrers (von den vorbeifahrenden Taxis wollte uns keins mitnehmen) haben wir es dann doch geschafft. Der Rest des Tages war unaufregender -ich hab die gute Netzabdeckung in Chile genutzt um meine Weiterreise im Januar zu planen/ buchen, wir haben gelesen, gedöst und einfach der Landschaft beim Vorbeiziehen zugesehen. Am Vormittag haben wir zuerst die Magellanstrasse mit einer Fähre (begleitet von Delfinen) überquert und dann ein paar Stunden später die Chilenisch-Argentinische Grenze mitten im Nirgendwo.

​Große Teile der Fahrt heute waren flache Steppe mit immer wieder großen Schafherden. Aber die letzte Stunde oder so vor Ushuaia wurde es wieder erst hüglig, dann bergig und die Vegetation hat mehr von Bariloche als was wir die letzten Tage so gesehen haben.

Jetzt haben wir noch 2.5 Tage hier für den Feuerland Nationalpark, den Beagle Kanal und was es sonst noch so zu sehen gibt und dann fliegt Thomas am 22.12. heim und für mich geht es aufs Schiff :)

This is my third attempt to write this post - my cell phone has not been very cooperative so far. But I have a good feeling this time.

And we are here - in Ushuaia, 4.700km as the crow flies from Rurrenabaque, the small town in the north of Bolivia from where I started heading south a month ago, and the end of the third part* of my journey.

Zooming out, you can see that "the end of the world" is not so far fetched, on this latitude there is actually not much else.

On Sunday evening, after our Torres del Paine hike (which is worth a separate blog entry) we came back to Puerto Natales, where we had left our luggage in a guesthouse (a few days in mountain huts really make you appreciate clean clothes and a warm room). Yesterday (ie Monday) we took it easy, had a late breakfast and then had a better look at Puerto Natales, a small town with some rather crooked little houses. Midday we caught a bus to Punta Arenas, which surprised us with its size. With 130,000 inhabitants, this is a real city and we used the long hours of daylight for a stroll through the city, followed at a delicious dinner at a place called La Marmita.

It is only 250km from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia, but they keep you busy for a day. We left Punta Arenas at 8:30 in the morning. However, only after a bit of drama - Punta Arenas a) has no bus station, the individual bus companies each depart from their offices and b) has a strange way of numbering houses - 264 is not the same as 0264, which Google Maps does not undertand either. Long story short - 10 minutes ahead of the time on our tickets we stood in front of the wrong house. But thanks to a nice driver (the passing taxis did not want to take us) we made it in the end.

The rest of the day was less exciting - I used the good network coverage in Chile to plan / book my onward journey in January, we read, dosed and just watched the scenery as we passed by.

In the morning we crossed the Magellan Strait by ferry (accompanied by what I think were dolphins) and a few hours later the Chilean-Argentinean border in the middle of nowhere.

Large parts of the trip today were flat pampas with occasionally large flocks of sheep. But the last hour or so before Ushuaia it became hilly again, then mountainous and the vegetation reminded us more of Bariloche than what we had seen the last days.

Now we have 2.5 days here for the Tierra del Fuego National Park, the Beagle Channel and whatever else there is to see and then Thomas is flying on 22.12. home and I will board my ship for Antarctica :)
